for everyone

This is a shot of Pleasant Hill around midnight.  This area was built up about ten years ago into a modern shopping area.  It's located near, want was known as, the Monument (where a WWI memorial statue stands (I'll have to get a shot of that someday)).  On the right is a movie theater.

I just needed to get out and shoot something.  Night photography requires a tripod (for steadiness) and a lot of patience.  This shot was a full 3 seconds long -- strangely the girl sitting by the theater didn't move.

Thanks Kevin, I used my 50mm f/1.8 for a change. It's a nice little lens but not as useful durring the day

brian the 50mm f1.8 is a very sharp lens and excellent for product shoots. you can start a small business by just using that lens to shoot food for restaurant menus :) set it to f2.8, shoot the dish and salivate over the bokeh :)

You caught me Kevin, I got careless and left things set to f/8 from using the 70-300. I appreciate the business advice but am sticking amature stuff, for now... I had a discussion with a guy who did what you are suggesting (restaurant menus) and it turned out to be harder than either of us thought, lighting, backgrounds, angles, etc. Fortunately, he had a good flash unit, but I still want to get another lens (16-85 VR) before I invest in a flash. I've noticed a lot of your shots lean toward commercial consideration -- it takes extra thought and work to pull those off.

No brians, your setting was spot on for the photo above where you need everything pin sharp and f8 works just fine :) I have recently started going commercial thus the change in my style of shooting :)

From what I've experienced so far, f/5.6 is the sweet spot of this 50mm, but us amatures deserve a little lattitude. Good luck on the commercial venture -- you've certainly got the talent for it :)

I guess the girl was very tired..., since it was midnight you said. ;-))
Great phot Brian. I looks very bright, almost not night at all.

Hi Gerda. Yes, the place was well lit, which is one reason I picked it, but you can also tell by the black sky. The area is pretty safe so you can hang out after the movie without worrying.

my GOODNESS...this is vivid

The place is painted up pretty vivid to begin with, but the long exposures of the traffic and street lights kind of put it over the top :)

Very nice photo--and wow! Pleasant Hill has sure changed.

It sure has! Monument Blvd used to end at Contra Costa Blvd, but now it crosses it and the picture was taken about a block up (West). The bowling ally used to be in the block to the left in the picture.
