Blog EntryWalk In The ParkJun 6, '08 12:28 AM
for everyone

I haven't been doing much the last week or so because my new blood-pressure medicine has left me tired and depressed.  Things started getting better Wednesday and yesterday I bought a new dining table.  So today I actually walked to my local park since they won't allow vans to park there anymore.  I got a few shots of this guy on the softball diamond on the way.

I don't know what this guy is yet.  He mostly laid low in the grass but would suddenly pop up and walk around, then he would take off, fly around and lay back in the grass again.

Not much was going on at the park so I just took pictures of trees and flowers.

There was a squirrel sitting in this tree...

These fragrant deteriorating blossoms are on the same trees that appeared to be Chestnuts last Fall.

This is the resurrection of a bush that used to be nestled beneath a huge Willow, both were cut down last year.

I had to come back and add this...  this means me.

Yes Debbie, it really pisses me off -- I sent an email to the city council but got no reply. I don't even know why it's posted -- it may be because so many homeless people are living in their cars here.

Hi Jenn, It was a beautiful afternoon -- I'm really fortunate to have so much so close by here in the middle of a suburban metropolis. I hope someone can recognize that bird :)

Ok, I found it, the bird is a Killdeer! http://www.lauraerickson.com/bird/Species/Plovers/Killdeer/KILLGallery.html
Bob, I've got to get that book.

According to Wikapedia the Killdeer is a medium sized Plover

I googled for Killdeer and apparently it is an American bird that rarely visits Europe. In 2005 some were spotted in Holland and immidiately hundreds of birdwatchers went to the place where they were seen....

Beautiful photos Brian, I'm glad you're feeling better again, so you can show us! It is a very natural looking park, not a cultivated one. How long does it take you to walk there? That bush looks very colorful. Are we supposed to see a squirrel in the photo of the tree? ;-))

It is a very weird rule that cars are allowed to park, but vans are not! I can understand they want to prevent people to live there, but you can also prevent that by not allowing to park after sunset, or something like that. In Holland it is very common that people are not allowed in natural reserves after sunset.

Hi Gerda, I don't know how common the Killdeer is here, it's the first one I've ever seen -- perhaps noticed is more correct. I'm becoming more aware of the different birds around me as I continue photographing them. I had never noticed the Stilts or Avocets at the marina before but then you have to learn to look. The Killdeer looked like any other bird just sitting there in the field at first.
There was a squirrel sitting on that big branch only a moment before, but I was still adjusting the exposure and missed him. I thought the bark of the tree looked so nice I decided to post it. One day I hope to make an album of tree bark -- there is so much character there.
Homelessness is a big problem around here. Recently being homeless myself, briefly, I sympathise with their plight. However, there is a lot of drinking and drug abuse with these people, they leave a lot of litter about, and obstruct the middle class image Concord is trying to present. There is no easy solution. The ban on vans is a little harsh though -- as you suggest, I think there could be a better way.

Killdeers are quite common here in the US. Brian, get that book already. :-)
