for everyone

I got out and over to Ocean Beach a few days ago.  Since it was a work day I had to leave early to beat the traffic.  I arrived about 6:00 AM, it was cool but not cold with a little fog still hanging in the air.

FYI: Ocean Beach is the big beach in the San Francisco area.  It starts at the Cliff House Restaurant ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cliff_House ), and what used to be the Sutro Baths (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sutro_Baths (when I was a kid, I went ice skating where the huge swimming pool once was)), running southward for 8 miles ending near the San Francisco Zoo.

Zoo on right, ocean behind me.

It's not obvious but the ocean was a foaming cauldron.

I didn't go to the beach with the intention of shooting surfers, but shortly after I arrived they started coming.  These guys are a combination of crazy and super athletes.  People drown in these waters regularly.  Even on calm days this place can be treacherous.

These poor guys struggled out against the waves for 20 minutes just to get our chest deep.

Then there were the guys down the beach, fishing.

Eventually, the surfers caught a wave and got short rides.

As the sun came up, more surfers arrived.

Thought I'd throw this shot from Fort Funston in too -- it's a few miles further south near the town of Pacifica.

This is a favorite place of hang gliders.  They walk out on the bark, to the lower left, and jump off the this cliff with their gliders.  No one was there this day since the wind was down to 0.

How I wish I have scenery like these to shoot over here. Thanks for sharing Brian and keep them coming. Great stuff :)

looks like a good way to spend some time, observing others...no way I would even think about getting out in those waters, but you have to admire their tenacity

Thanks Kevin, but I have marveled at some of your panos as well :)

I'm on your side Debbie -- better to watch from the beach. Even the fishermen seem a little crazy to me.

I have to drive for nearly an hour to get to our Dutch beach, but somehow I never do it. Seeing your photos makes
me wonder why I never take the trouble to go there. I love the smell of the water, the sound and the sight of the waves.
On an average day we don't have waves like this though...
These are beautiful shots again. I especially like the fourth one, with the high waves and the men just standing,
waiting for.... what? Even higher waves? Resting up before struggling another 20 minutes?

I'm afraid it's the same with me Gerda, I got to the beach a few months back but that was the first time in quite a while. I think you were right the last time, they guys were resting up before going at it for another 20 minutes. In my mind they were saying "OMG, are we really going to do this... you go first. No you go first!" When I get to the beach, even if it's just to sit and watch, a piece of my archetypical puzzle gets put in place -- then I'm ok for a while.

*sigh* Being landlocked blows. I'm from New Jersey and I LOVE the beach, but now I'm in Utah and, well, the Great Salt Lake just doesn't do it for me. These pictures are amazing!!

Thanks Karin, glad you could stop by :) Yes, this a great area, but at least you have mountains in your back yard -- years ago I drove through Nebraska and nearly went crazy, they got notin there but corn, notin. Actually, I have a very fond memory of riding the roller coaster at Salt Lake in the 50's, the only time I ever was on one -- I wonder if it's still there... Thanks again :)

Fog stirs around the hill with shine sunrise rays flowing quiet and sleepy street.
Ocean rolls with white waves claws beach sand.
Two surfers standing peacefully in nonstop rolling ocean.
Surfers with surf boards under their arms walks into ocean comfortably.
Two fishermen on rocks are fishing in misty fog.
One surfer jumps on board in roaring waves.
He is flying on board with flowing ocean waves.
More surfers walk to fly on ocean waves.
One surfer claws his hands on his surf ship to fly into oceans like a captain flying In his spaceship into mystery black sky .
Flying to see all over beautiful ocean space world.
